Improving Vision Naturally at the Office

Computer use has been associated with blurred or decreased vision. Looking at the computer screen for hours on end can cause eye strain. People who use computers daily often display symptoms of eye stress and eye strain. Working in properly lit areas and taking vision breaks along with eye exercises will help improve your vision naturally. Changes in the way the office is set up and simple exercises can improve your vision if you are one of the many people experiencing computer related vision problems.

To improve vision, computer areas should have adequate lighting. The computer monitor should not be the only source of light in the computer area. Computer areas should not be brightly lit either. Having too bright of light in a computer area increases eye strain. Lower levels of light are best. Use overhead lights when available. If overhead lighting isn't available a desk lamp will add enough light to decrease eye strain.

Looking at a computer screen can be stressful on your eyes. Set up the office so that you are eighteen to twenty-four inches from the monitor to reduce eye strain. Taller adults should have their monitor higher than others. Platforms to place monitors on to adjust height are helpful in reducing eye strain. Adjust your monitor to reduce glare. Arrange your office so that any windows are to the sides of the monitor to eliminate glare.

Working under fluorescent lights can also cause eye strain. Home offices shouldn't have fluorescent lighting, use soft white lights instead. To reduce the effects of fluorescent lights at school or at work take routine breaks in natural light. If you are unable to get away from the fluorescent lights then you can close your eyes and let them rest for a few minutes while you take your breaks.

Office walls should be soothing colors. Try to stay away from bright white walls as they increase glare. Offices with flat paint in soft colors are less strenuous on vision. If walls are white, placing pictures or other pieces of art on the walls will break up glare. Using matte finish paints also help reduce glare from walls.

Blinking often when using a computer helps to lubricate your eyes. Blink slowly ten times to lubricate your eyes hourly. If you are using a computer for long periods at a time remember to take frequent vision breaks. Take this time to focus on something further away for a few moments. Practice finding something to look at then relaxing your eyes so they aren't focused on anything in particular to improve your vision.

Take time each day to practice resting your eyes. Place a cool cloth over your eyes in the evening helps to soothe eyes. While you have the cloth over your eyes relax and breathe slowly in and out of one nostril then the other. Relaxation is important for your vision. Even while we are asleep our eyes are at work.

Often poor vision is caused by environmental factors. Changing these factors can improve vision naturally. Don't spend all day reading a computer screen. Look across the room or do eye exercises hourly so your eyes won't tire. If you notice your eyes getting tired, spend a few minutes focusing on different items across the office or outside a window. Trace the building across the street with your eyes. Focus on a spot ten to twenty feet away and then back to a closer spot. Repeat this ten times per set.
